"The Story"

I have decided to follow my heart and do what I love to do, it has always been a dream to have my own restaurant.

My Curry Rice concept is based on what I experienced while visiting Japan. At every railway station, small little stores were churning out hot streaming curry rice... Being Indian I was amazed at how the Japanese had taken Curry and Rice, simplified it, and made a multi billion dollar industry. The Japanese have made it so simple that it is the first thing a Japanese kid is taught how to cook. And Yes, the Japanese amaze me.

Growing up India I come from a family of brilliant cooks like mother Connie and her sister Berna. I got to taste and watch them cook many fabulous dishes. I took their recipes and came up with my Traffic light sauces (Red, Yellow and Green) which everyone can enjoy.

Now, after living in the US for 16 years, I have learned that America loves choice. I remember my first meal in Alabama, the waitress asked me 20 questions about 1 dish I ordered... which dressing, what sides, how I wanted it cooked, etc etc... I figured that the Mongolian Grill serving style would work well and so the idea of Build-Your-Own Curry..any way you want it...

And thus the concept of Martin's Curry Rice was born. After a few taste trials, measurements and recipes were formulated and research into starting a restaurant was conducted. The key was to find the right primary location. I looked all over Cary, Apex, and Morrisville for a suitable location for the restaurant. I eventually found 9549 Chapel Hill Rd, a 1600 sq ft space right in the heart of the Triangle between Cary and Morrisville.

The space was a hole in the wall, and it took a fantastic team of people like restaurant expert Greg, realtor Mary, builder Steve, plumber Billy , HVAC expert Tommy, painter Ray, equipment guru Chris, architect and designer Andrea, engineer Ed, fire safety Steve, their teams and many more who “Made it Happen”. Come check out their work and see what a fantastic job they all did. Check out their profiles below and if you need their services, you can trust them to do a great job.

To put it all together I had my buddy Mark Winston help me with the business development using the website as a key marketing tool, Tesh Parek do my photographs, Mitchell Coles do my Fliers and many more who are professionals but have helped me out as friends.

My family Kaoru, Aoi and Takumi have been my daily inspiration and the source of my passion and energy to put this together. My close family friend Mani who has known me since childhood has helped me every step of the way. There are many family and friends that have encouraged me and helped me build this concept, taste the food, and have supported me thru this entire process. I have certainly thankful and grateful to the wonderful people I know.

And thus this July 2010 a dream comes true. Believe in your dreams and You Can Make it Happen.

If you do see my lease, you will know that I got a great deal. Thanks to Mary for working thru this deal for over 2 months till we got it right. Mark has been my very close friend for the last 11 years. As a hobby he is passionate and talented musician. I called him when I first taught about the concept and he gave me the inside into the business aspects of starting a food business and told me that I just have to do it to make it happen. When it came to building my website he did the research and design to make sure that it was a tool that was going to be a marketing investment that will attract web searches to get me new business. Thus I have a simple but effective web site.

Steve Mattock - General Contractor, Tile and Carpentry
Above and Beyond builders
(919) 524-0433

Knowing well that the construction was going to be a challenge I decided to choose Steve to be my General Contractor and do the Tiles and Carpentry. Steve with the limited budget was able to do a great job. He will do what it takes to do the job to the finish.

Billy Beasley - Plumbing
Progressive Plumbing, Raleigh Electrical
Contractor, Heating & Air
8541A Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh - (919) 782-7106

With the Grease trap not in place, it was my biggest worry to find the right plumber. The Progressive team was very responsive when it came to coming up with a estimate. My intial taught was that Progressive was big company and would give me the highest quote, but ended up that they were the lowest. Billy is a very gentle and his team (Brandon, Eric,...) are a bunch of dedicated staff who adore his leadership.

Tommy Stallings - HVAC
Progressive Plumbing, Raleigh Electrical
Contractor, Heating & Air
8541A Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh - (919) 782-7106

When the HVAC became one of the big issues in negociating the lease, Tommy and his team came in to check it out. They were a fun attitude (Darryl, Tom and Jimmy) but professionals when giving me the right advice. The Progressive team has the resources to make it happen.

Ray Contreras - Painting and Dry Wall
(919) 868-2740

When it came to the Demo, Ray offered to help me get it done at a very resonable rate. It was a challenge cleaning up the dump, but he and his team work nights and go me to a clean start. His painting and drywall work has to be re-done many a time because the rest of the crews had to break the walls to do stuff. he is very serious and passionate when it comes to Paiting.
